How do I download a YouTube thumbnail?

Can I download a YouTube thumbnail in 1080p or 4K?

No. For regular videos the largest thumbnail YouTube stores is HD 1280×720, even if the video itself is 4K. Any site offering a "1080p" or "4K" thumbnail is upscaling that same image. Shorts are the exception: they have a vertical 1080×1920 thumbnail, which ThumbDL shows automatically.

Why is there no HD version for some videos?

YouTube only creates the 1280×720 version when the uploader provides a high-resolution thumbnail or video. Older and low-resolution videos often only have the 480×360 size. ThumbDL hides sizes that don't exist.

Can I download every thumbnail from a YouTube A/B test?

Yes. When a creator is testing several thumbnails with YouTube's Test & Compare, YouTube shows each viewer just one of them. ThumbDL checks the channel's uploads repeatedly and lists every variant it finds under "A/B test thumbnails". YouTube only serves test variants as 720×404 WebP images. Once the test ends, the winning image becomes the normal HD thumbnail. Tests only run on recent uploads, so older videos won't show variants.

Does it work with YouTube Shorts and live streams?

Can I download thumbnails on iPhone or Android?

Yes. Open ThumbDL in your phone's browser, paste the link from the YouTube app's Share button and tap Download. On iPhone, press and hold the preview image and choose "Save to Photos" to put it straight in your camera roll.

Is it legal to download YouTube thumbnails?

Downloading a thumbnail is fine for personal use, reference or research. Thumbnails are copyrighted by the video's creator, though, so don't reuse them as your own, in ads, or commercially without permission. Commentary, reviews and news reporting may fall under fair use.
