YouTube thumbnail requirements
- Resolution: 1280×720 is the standard. Larger 16:9 images such as 1920×1080 are accepted too, but YouTube stores and serves thumbnails at up to 1280×720.
- Aspect ratio: 16:9. This matches the player and the preview in every layout. Other ratios get letterboxed or cropped.
- File size: under 2 MB. If your PNG is too big, export it as a high-quality JPG instead.
- Format: JPG, PNG or GIF. Animated GIFs only show their first frame.
- Account: custom thumbnails need a verified YouTube account (phone verification in YouTube Studio).

The 640×480 and 480×360 versions are 4:3, so they include black bars above and below a 16:9 image. Max resolution only exists when the video was uploaded in 720p or higher, or has a custom thumbnail at that size.
