YouTube Tag Extractor
See the hidden tags on any YouTube video. Paste a link to find its tags and hashtags, then copy them in one click.
How to find tags on a YouTube video
- Copy the video link from the address bar or the Share button.
- Paste it above and press Extract Tags.
- Copy the tags you want as a comma-separated list, ready to paste into YouTube Studio.
YouTube hides tags from viewers, but they're still part of every video's public page data. ThumbDL reads them for you. It also pulls out any hashtags from the description, which (unlike tags) do show on YouTube.
Do YouTube tags still matter?
Less than most people think. YouTube says tags play a minimal role in discovery. Your title, thumbnail and description matter far more. Tags are mainly useful for:
- Common misspellings of your topic or channel name, e.g. "thumnail" as well as "thumbnail".
- Alternative names for the same thing, like "yt" and "youtube", or product model numbers.
- Research. Seeing which phrases successful videos in your niche target can give you ideas for titles and topics.
Keep tags relevant. YouTube's policies treat excessive or misleading tags as spam. The combined length of all tags is limited to 500 characters. Good thumbnails usually do much more for views: test yours with the thumbnail preview tool.
Frequently asked questions
How can I see the tags of a YouTube video?
Paste the video's link into ThumbDL's tag extractor. It shows every tag the uploader added, plus the hashtags from the description, and lets you copy them all at once.
Why does a video show no tags?
Many creators don't add tags at all, and Shorts often have none. If the extractor finds nothing, the uploader simply didn't set any.
Is it okay to copy another video's tags?
Tags aren't copyrighted, so using similar ones is common. Only use tags that genuinely describe your own video, though. Irrelevant tags break YouTube's spam policy and won't help you rank.
What is the YouTube tag character limit?
All of a video's tags together can be up to 500 characters. Tags with spaces count extra because YouTube wraps them in quotes.
What's the difference between tags and hashtags?
Tags are hidden keywords set in YouTube Studio. Hashtags are written with a # in the title or description, appear as clickable links above the title, and lead to a page of videos using that hashtag.
